Dogs are digging the nightlife

Treat Fido to 'Yappy hour' for a muttini, get a pawdicure and more

Back in the '70s, when singer Alicia Bridges was belting out her hit "I Love the Nightlife"and nightclub owner Steve Rubell had New York City trendoids on the velvet ropes outside his famous Studio 54 — a scene that forever encapsulated the night fever frenzy of the disco era — no-one could have possibly forecast that today's party animals would, in fact, be animals. Dogs to be exact.

These days, many pooches around the country lead a very active social life after dark and the trend is definitely growing. And, if Rubell is the name most associated with the nightlife of the '70s, then Los Angeles businessman Brandon Hochman must take today's credit for putting dogs in the nightlife mix.

Party Dogs

Downtown Event Features Food, Drink and Plenty of Fresh Sod

By Kathleen Nye Flynn

It's just after dark and on a rooftop in the Arts District, the dogs have begun to arrive. A pair of Shepherd mixes patter in wearing matching skull-and-crossbones t-shirts, followed by a Maltese-Yorkie mix named Dudley, who sports a tux.

Organizers of SkyBark - this May 20 gala for people and their dogs - are busy putting final touches on the lounge's minimalist decor, preparing for an expected 300 or so guests who will come with pups in tow.

At the front door, a red carpet bordered with thick rows of green sod gives humans and hounds a glamorous - and functional - entrance. In a first-floor loft a silent auction is ready for bids as canine-inspired works by local artists line the walls. The roof features a doggy playpen with 2,500 square feet of grass enclosed in mesh fencing. For those with two legs, a bar on a deck offers amazing views of the Downtown Los Angeles skyline. L.A.'s Spot for Real Bar Hounds

Bad news for Los Angeles dog-sitters: Even the youngest pups get served at SkyBark. (Petapotty.com)

Bringing man's best friend along on a trip to Los Angeles has gotten a little easier, thanks to SkyBark, a nightspot where dogs are not only allowed but welcomed. A cross between a singles bar and a dog park, SkyBark features a full bar and live music, making it easy for canines and their owners to mingle and check each other out.

SkyBark is the brainchild of Ralph Diaz, owner of Top Dog Canine Leather, and Brandon Hochman, inventor of the PETaPOTTY, a portable box of grass that's used to toilet-train dogs. The partners were looking for a way to stage a benefit for four-legged survivors of Hurricane Katrina when they held their first event in March. WSJ Weekend

At This Club, Party Hounds Raise the Woof

By

Arnie Cooper

After 13 years living in Southern California, I'm finally walking down the red carpet. But the camera flashes are for the honey-eyed redhead who has accompanied me to the Woofer's Ball, a special event at SkyBark.

That's not a typo. SkyBark is the canine version of SkyBar, the Mondrian Hotel's iconic gathering place for the Hollywood elite. Like its namesake, SkyBark also offers spectacular views of L.A., only this club -- and only this club -- allows dogs to accompany their owners for a couple of drinks. (Rover can sip on "Dogwa.")

And who cares if SkyBark is just a "seasonal private party" held at the headquarters of PETaPOTTY (the dog version of Port-A-Potty) in a seedy section of L.A. The dogs certainly don't. And the human beings don't seem to mind either. Read the full story...
